SW KS, Western OK, and SE CO May 8, 2013

Date: 8 May 2013

Location: CO/KS/OK

Summary:  Border area Headed out the door with a Garden City, KS Target in mind. A couple of storms fired in NE New Mexico and were tracking into SE Colorado. Both storms indicated that they had some rotation shortly after initiation. I was heading south out of Goodland, KS and wished I had taken Hwy 287 out of Limon like I pondered doing. There was some crapvection that had developed earlier near Eads and things started forming on down the line. I was thinking outflow boundaries would trigger some storms in KS so I stuck with my Garden City target, but took Hwy 27 south from Goodland just in case. I stopped in Tribune, KS and re-evaluated the latest outlooks and model runs. I continued south and when I got to Syracuse I committed to the storms coming into SE Colorado. Mike Carlson, Scott Hammel and Christa Weichmann were already on those storms and was getting constant updates on Voxer for a time as to what the storms were doing. They all caught a brief landspout tornado in the Springfield, CO area. There was another storm that was coming into the Boise City, OK area that looked really promising on radar, but as soon as I arrived it went major league outflow dominant and then pretty much collapsed and died. Pretty frustrating first chase out of the gate for me, but they all can’t be easy. More storms started to fire back up near Sharon Springs and Syracuse but I opted out and headed west hoping for some sunlit towers and mammatus photo ops as the sun was getting low in the western sky. Came across an old windmill and an awesome homestead along the way.
